4/7 Five Downtown Merchants Try to Overturn Farmers Market Ruling

At a Common Council meeting on March third, Mayor Kraig Sadownikow settled a dispute over an expansion of the Downtown Farmers Market by casting the deciding vote which would allow the market to expand. On Friday, five downtown merchants led by Mike Husar found some strange statute in a city code that they are now trying to enforce.  It is a petition for review. A petition for review is defined as a “formal application made to a court in writing that requests action on a certain matter.” The five businesses are trying to force the Common Council to reconsider its March third decision allowing an expansion of the Farmers’ Market on North Main Street this summer. That reconsideration will be on the agenda of the council’s April 15 organizational meeting when two new aldermen will be sworn in. Many business owners along with Kelli Boone, Downtown West Bend Association Event Manager are fearful since two new aldermen will be thrown into the mix which they haven’t been involved from the beginning despite the fact they replaced council members that voted in favor of the expansion. The five businesses filing the petition to overturn the expansion are Husars House of Fine Diamonds; HTG Design Jewelers; The Exclusive Company., West Bend Coin and Diffusion Hair design. Boone called the petition “an attempt to reverse the expansion.” In an email sent to downtown businesses, Boone asked they “attend the meeting to show their support and spread the word. Both sides on the issue will have three minutes to present their case before a re-vote is taken on the expansion. The April 15th meeting starts at six pm and will be open to the public.
