Five Strange but Effective Ways to Deal with Allergies

Seasonal allergies affect about 40 million Americans every year.  Medications like Claritin and Zyrtec can be a big help.  But if that's not enough, here are five strange but effective ways to get some relief.  Plus, they're all-natural.

#1.)  Shampoo Your Eyelashes.  Pollen clings to them, then slowly makes its way into your eyes.

--But researchers at Long Island Hospital in Brooklyn found that washing your eyelashes with baby shampoo twice a day can reduce redness, itching and puffiness by as much as 90%.

#2.)  Eat Yogurt.  Scientists in Italy found that two cups of plain yogurt a day can prevent flare-ups and reduce symptoms by 40% or more.

--The "good" bacteria in yogurt helps your body produce more anti-inflammatory proteins.  Those proteins help your immune system stay calm when it encounters pollen or other things that might cause an allergic reaction.

#3.)  Drink Iced Tea.  The antioxidants stop your body from producing a major allergy trigger called "immunoglobulin E".  (--pronounced immune-oh-glob-you-lin . . . or just IgE for short.)

--Black OR green tea is fine.  Try to drink at least 24 ounces a day.

#4.)  Wear Clothing That's All Cotton.  The reason dust clings to your TV screen is because the screen builds up a static charge that pulls in dust particles while they're floating around in the air.

--Synthetic materials like polyester and nylon do the same thing when they rub against each other.  Which means you could walk around outside for a few hours without touching anything . . . but still be COVERED in pollen.

--Cotton and linen attract about half as much.

#5.)  Avoid Certain Foods.  In PEAK allergy season, the proteins in some foods . . . including apples, carrots, zucchini, celery, and tomatoes . . . can make allergies even worse.

--It's called "cross-reactivity," and affects about one-third of people who have issues with pollen.  If you don't WANT to give up those foods, just make sure you cook them.  Heat breaks down the specific proteins that are responsible for it.

Washington County Circuit Judge Andrew Gonring ruled there was probable cause to show that Schultz inflicted the injuries that resulted in the infant’s death on Feb. 25.  According to Washington County Medical Examiner Robert Posont the Cause of death was complications of head injuries. Schultz admitted to investigators that he threw the infant onto a bed after it would not stop crying and the child bounced once or twice. The abuse allegedly occurred at a residence where Schultz had lived with his girlfriend the mother of the infant the infant and the mother's parents. The infant was treated at Children's Hospital in Wauwatosa for severe brain injuries and internal bleeding in the space between the brain and skull as well as in the retina. Physicians told investigators those injuries are consistent with an infant being violently shaken or thrown. Schultz is in custody at the Dodge Correctional Institution for violating conditions of bail for his release from jail in July 2011. He was released on bail at that time after being charged with multiple counts of burglary. One condition of his release was that he was not to commit any crimes. He will next appear in court on June 13th for a hearing on the first-degree reckless homicide charge.

A 25 year old WEST Bend woman and her 24 year old boyfriend also from West Bend are in jail today following a police investigation that found a three year old girl dead inside their apartment on Tuesday at 2113 Barton Avenue. Police said in a statement Wednesday they received a call from a doctor’s office on Tuesday that there might have been an unresponsive child at 2113 Barton Avenue. Officers responded to the scene and when they arrived they discovered the deceased three-year-old in the apartment. Police say the girl had injuries to her face and body, and autopsy results showed signs the little girl had been abused. West Bend Police Lieutenant Richard Lucka says that the girl had injuries to her face and body and that during their investigation they found several signs of abuse and neglect. As a result of their examination of the victim and their scene investigation they arrested the woman and man on charges related to the death of the 3 year old girl. Police spent a major portion of the day on Tuesday at the apartment building. Neighbor’s report seeing police officers bringing out bags, boxes of evidence and even furniture from apartment number 11. Neighbors say five people lived inside the unit – two adults and three children. Family members identified the little girl as “Haley,” and described her as a bubbly and smart child who loved her two sisters. Family members confirm the two other girls are in the custody of Child Protective Services.

BO MORRISON 911 CALL UNEDITED RELEASED

Washington County Sheriff’s officials have released the unedited 911 call a Slinger woman made moments after her husband shot and killed someone hiding in their home's enclosed porch last month. Contrary to beliefs from the victims family the recording does not reveal the shooter using any racial slurs or making other incriminating statements that Bo Morrison’s family suspected might have been redacted from an earlier version of the call. The Washington County Sheriff's Department originally released an edited version of the 6 1/2 minute 911 call, and said all that was removed were the caller's use of names and other identifying information. Twenty year old Bo Morrison, was fleeing an underage drinking party next door when he ducked into Adam Kind's back porch about 2 a.m on March 3. Less than five minutes later, Kind confronted him and fired one shot at his chest. Last month Washington County District Attorney Mark Bensen ruled the shooting was justified, prompting an effort by Morrison's family and friends to repeal Wisconsin's castle doctrine law, passed last year. The sheriff’s department also released a nonemergency call Kind had made about 1 a.m., complaining about the noise from the party next door. He tells police it's not the first time his neighbor Tim Hess' daughters had hosted parties in their garage, and that he was tired of being argued with by 25 year olds.

FIRE DESTROYS RICHFIELD HOME

On Tuesday just prior to midnight  the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to 3441 Bark Lake Rd. in the Village of Richfield for a report of a small fire in the garage. The Richfield Volunteer Fire Department also responded. Prior to either department’s arrival the homeowner evacuated all occupants from the residence. Upon arriving at scene deputies saw that the garage was fully engulfed with flames. Richfield Volunteer Fire Department with additional fire department assistance from Jackson, Germantown, Slinger and Hartford extinguished the fire. There were no serious injuries as a result of the incident. The fire was first detected by a neighbor who was walking his dog past the residence. The neighbor investigated further and observed flames, determining the garage was on fire. He immediately made contact with the sleeping homeowner at the front door. The homeowner attempted to extinguish the flames but soon determined emergency personnel were needed.  The fire originated in the garage and spread into the residence before it was extinguished. The residence is a total loss, with property damage in excess of $200,000 dollars. WE energies assisted with de-energizing the residence. Occupants of the home had immediate family in the area and at this point didn’t need assistance from Red Cross. The fire is still under investigation with a cause not yet determined.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office was notified at seven am of the crash. Upon arriving at the scene of the crash which was located just South of Donegal Road and County K deputies found the car partially crushed and one of the teenagers trapped inside the car. He was flown from the scene by Flight for Life and taken to Froedert Hospital in Milwaukee with non-life threatening injuries. The driver was taken to Community Memorial Hospital with relatively minor injuries by Richfield Rescue Squad. Preliminary investigation indicates the driver had been north bound on CTH K and drove partially off of the east gravel shoulder, re-entering his lane of travel, crossing into the south bound lane and entered the west ditch and overturned. The vehicle came to rest in the ditch on the south side of Donegal Rd on its wheels. BUS CRASH INJURES TWO UPDATED

THE DRIVER OF THE BUS EDITH CHRISTIANSON OF HARTFORD HAS TOLD AUTHORITIES THAT she took her eyes off the road for just a moment to open a window.
