An off duty Washington County Sheriff's Deputy and the business owner of Jake’s Auto Service in the Town of Wayne set up surveillance with an improvised alarm system this past weekend due to recent battery thefts at the business. The two of them then camped out in a building on the property. A short time after setting up the alarm, a vehicle entered and a 48 year old Theresa man exited the vehicle and removed the battery set up for him outside the business. When the vehicle began to leave it was stopped by the off duty deputy and business owner. Upon initial questioning the suspect admitted to the theft of the battery and also additional thefts in recent nights at Jake's. The Business owner reported he was out around 72 dollars in batteries. A search of the vehicle turned up a lot of other scrap that he admitted to taking from Milwaukee. That scrap was brought back to the department and placed in evidence and a teletype was sent out to area departments. The suspect had his photo and finger prints taken and was booked and later released. According to Lieutenant Martin Schulteiss of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department formal charges of theft are now pending against the man.
