12/24 West Bend Man Receives 90 Days for Intentionally Running Down Deer

29 year old Michael A. Cox from West Bend has been ordered by Ozaukee County Circuit Judge Sandy Williams to begin a 90-day jail sentence on Thursday. Cox was charged in May with killing a deer without a license in an incident on April 27th that was videotaped by a security camera at the We Energies power plant on the Lake Michigan shoreline in Port Washington. The videotape shows the truck back up, then headlights are flashed at the group of deer. When the deer started running, the videotape shows Cox turn the truck onto South Beach Road toward the deer According to the criminal complaint a power plant employee also witnessed Cox drive his truck onto South Beach Road, and accelerate "at a very high rate of speed," and then strike the deer. Less than 15 minutes later, Cox drove up to a police officer on patrol in the city and waved to get the officer's attention. Cox told the officer that he accidentally struck a deer with his truck while driving to the lakeshore to fish near the power plant. Cox wanted to claim the carcass, he told the officer. When the squad car and truck arrived at the crash site, the officer observed "a lot of deer fur in the road" and the dead deer. Cox subsequently admitted running down the deer with the pickup.  In a related violation On April 21, a state conservation warden ticketed Cox in Washington County with fishing for trout without the required trout stamp. In addition to serving a 90 day jail term Cox is also barred from seeking a state hunting license for three years.
