She waived her right to a preliminary hearing on the three new charges and entered pleas of no contest to each. She was already facing 9 other charges of which 6 were dismissed through a plea bargain. Judge James Muehlbaur found her guilty on a total of six charges and set her sentencing date for February 12th. Melanie Smith’s three city crime spree has finally come to an end. The 22 Year old West Bend women broke into homes in West Bend, Slinger and Kewaskum stealing primarily jewelry and coins.
Smith told police she was pawning the merchandise to pay for her severe addiction to opiates. According to the criminal complaint, in June, Smith snuck into an open window at a home on Longmeadow drive in West Bend and stole a number of necklaces. Next, she burglarized a home on Hillcrest in Kewaskum stealing a coin collection and a metal box containing a handgun. And finally she plead no contest to a burglary in Slinger at a home on James Court where she stole sunglass, cash, jewelry and coins.
Offices searched her apartment in West Bend and recovered the box with the gun, but the rest of the merchandise was already pawned.
Smith faces a maximum sentence of 12 years and six months and fines of up to $25,000.
