4/16 Kewaskum School Board Takes Step for Charter School

The reality of a charter school coming into existence in the Kewaskum School district took a step forward Monday night as school board members approved to continue the development process. Kewaskum School Superintendent Jim Smasal was a guest on the WBKV morning show and commented on this positive action. Smasal said everyone in the district is excited about this charter school possibility including administrators and parents. During a January meeting, Superintendent Smasal told School Board members about a mid-April deadline if the district wanted to go for a planning grant or an implementation grant. Both are about $150,000. It was later revealed during the March 24 School Board meeting the School Board needed to make a decision to approve the development of a charter school by Monday night’s meeting, which was the deadline for the planning grant. The district must now wait until August to find out if they are awarded the grant. If they get the grant, Smasal says a grievance board would then be put into place and the doors to the charter school would open in September 2015.
