Jobless filings in the region last month are lower than both the previous month and the previous year. Washington County’s unemployment rate last month was five point one percent, one tenth lower than April and eight tenths below May of 2013’s rate. Neighboring counties of Dodge and Fon Du Lac also saw a decline. Dodge County’s unemployment rate last month was five points eight percent, four-tenths lower than April and a full percent below last year’s rate. Fond du Lac County is down a full percentage point to five point two percent. Menominee County has the highest unemployment rate at fifteen point one percent and was one of two Wisconsin counties with double-digit jobless figures. Iron County was the other at eleven point three percent. All totaled last month’s jobless numbers decreased in all but three of Wisconsin’s 72 counties compared to April. Dane, Milwaukee and Ozaukee counties had no change. The state’s seasonally-adjusted jobless rate was at 5.7-percent last month compared to a 6.8-percent in May 2013.
