8 / 7 Four Candidates for Congress Hold Debate Tonight

The Four Republican candidates seeking the seat being vacated by longtime Congressman Tom Petri will be in attendance at a debate in Beaver Dam tonight. State lawmakers Glenn Grothman, Joe Leibham, and Duey Strobel and businessman Tom Denow will participate in the panel. One topic that could come up is the federal government’s role in education. Congressional candidate Joe Leibham said on a local Milwaukee radio talk show program yesterday afternoon that he would support federal education initiatives like the failed Head Start program. Grothman says that is a stark reversal of his statement issued just last month where he claimed that “education decisions should be made at the local and state level” and that he will fight further “intrusion” by the federal government into education. Grothman issued a statement through his campaign in which he said
I strongly oppose all federal involvement in education and have for over a decade when I was outspoken against President Bush’s No Child Left Behind law as federal overreach in 2001,” The winner in next Tuesday’s primary will advance to face the lone democrat seeking the post in November. The forum tonight will be held at the Beaver Dam Veterans Center from 7pm to 8:30pm
